Festival of 24 Things is an annual word + image event that challenges our observations, questions our word associations, and creates a photo-based dialogue for viewers and participants. Originally a film-based photo project (24 exposures, 24 words), the festival has transitioned to an increasingly digital interface in order to remain accessible as it has grown into a worldwide event. With this edition, we are excited to present work from Canada, France, the United States, Japan, and Uruguay.
This special edition of the festival was created especially for the dynamic building at 401 Richmond West in Toronto, and the words chosen reflect the architecture and diverse community that make up this creative centre. This edition added the challenge: Can you photograph a specific place from anywhere in the world with ten words as your guide?
A grid format encourages a broad range of interpretations. Reading horizontally, the individual photographer’s unique vision becomes apparent, while reading vertically allows a single word to be defined by a multiplicity of images. Literal representation of a word becomes as important as it’s metaphorical counterpart.
Selections of these photographs are on display in print form on the 3rd floor at 401 Richmond Street West, Toronto, Ontario, from Sept 17 - Oct. 17, 2010 as part of 401 Richmond's Built for Art, an independent project with
Scotiabank Nuit Blanche, Festival of 24 Things: 401 Richmond Edition will be open and viewable alongside screenings, performances, and other special happenings in the building and around the city on October 2 from 6:57 pm to sunrise.
